FBZ A.P.E. 53: Mission Gorge

The mission was accepted by myself and mpark65. We took off and made our way to complete the mission. Being the first mission, we hoped that others would be as easy. But in hindsight, we were wrong.

Over time performed missions with other explorers to get to the point of knowing the final location. There were many travels with a few difficult areas to overcome, but, with the assistance of the other explorers got to the goals.

2 MORE TO GO

So I have been working with a small group of geocachers to complete the first 6 missions. This is an updated overview of the two trips it has taken to get four of the six missions completed that are all in the San Diego area.
~~
It started with MAGICN3 and I heading to San Diego to start with the three caches closest together. We went to Mt Soledad as it was the closest to us as we headed south and then worked our way back to the north. So we started with BZ A.P.E. 55(a): Supernatural Supernova - this was unique in that the final coords seemed to be confusing as there were two locations. We finially figured out that the Traditional Cache along the nearby guardrail meant that the final location was the Original coords per the log entry and not the posted. We were excited to find the first of thee FBZ A.P.E. Missions and it did not disappoint. The treasure trove of information from the SECRET envelopes to the number of TBs was insane.
~~
Next, we did some Challenge Caches that had been recently published in the area by LaJolla- who can pass up Challenge Caches.
~~
Then we headed southeast to accomplish FBZ A.P.E. 54: Rock River Burial Mound. At first we thought this would require a long hike since the trail seemed to in a gated community. The gate is apparently open all day so we went in an parked at the trailhead mentioned in the description. The rocky riverbed meandered around a bit and at one intersection we went the wrong direction but soon realized our error and backtracked back to head the other way. This was another amazing find. So examined the evidence and took pictures for later and then headed back the way we came.
~~
The last one was actually the one we shouldve done first as it was the longest hike on the day. We enjoyed the hike but with a time limit for our return to OC of 7pm we needed to hustle. That said we did managed to add a few other caches along the way.
~~
After discussing the first three complete missions at an event, there were a few other cachers that wanted to start the A.P.E. Missions. So mpark65 and mike2find went down to San Diego a couple of weeks later and they completed the same three that MAGICN3 and I had previously completed. Once they returned we helped them navigate the fbz.geocaches.org site to enter all teh Spec Ops and mission codes into their accounts.
~~
Next we started to plan for the next cache on the list - since it was over a 2+ hour drive just to reach the trailhead. After almost a month, we headed down south to the farthest cache FBZ A.P.E. 52(a): The Bunkers. Here we unfortunately found the cache had been destroyed with only bits and pieces of the evidence left in the bunker. Muggles had apparently used the ammo can as a fire pit and burned it all. So disappointed but in reality felt immensely sad for SGTF as the work on the first three was unbelievable so we were expecting another amazing cache.
~~
The CO was contacted and given a Situation Report- devastated but did give permission for us to log the cache as foudn and thus another completed mission. He further assisted in helping us advance our rank by providing info about the TBs that had been in the cache container.
~~
Now we are in talks to figure out when we will head out to find the last two missions FBZ A.P.E. 51: Stone of the Lost Valley Revisited &
FBZ A.P.E. 56: Little Green Men. Hoping to make a trip before the end of September so we can get ready for the FINAL MISSION.

My ongoing mission

I have come down south with mike2find to take on the Apes of socal and the first in the mission was FZB 53.

We arrived at the Parking cords and began our trek through the mountains until we arrived at the burial site and explored the contents of the stash box, with a lot of things to look at and info to collect we then proceeded on to the next one which is FZB 54, upon arriving we managed to make our way through the community and up the trail to the next resting place and collected all the info to proceed on the the last one for the day which was FZB 55(a). We made our way to GZ only to find that there was so much paranormal activity they had fenced of the area for further investigations. We then went through some logs to find that we needed to readjust our cords to another location where we found and gathered the info needed to proceed. Turned out to be a great day for alien hunting.

STARTING POINT

I originally came across this series of caches called Operation Silverback while searching for Mystery Caches via geocaching online. I read the description and then found the Bookmark List and made a copy that I shared with some geocachers. So MAGIC3N and I decided to make a trip down to SF when he was back in the area and that happened to be this month.
~~
So we made a decision to head down to the Mt Soledad area to start with Operation 55a with the intent to cache our way over to Mission Gorge to get Missions 4 & 5 to get the three that were fairly close together. It was an epic day as I found over 40 caches and he was over 55 caches due to a couple of ALs that I had already completed. We managed to pick up a Virtual, Earthcache, Wherigo, mutiple puzzle caches, a dozen challenge caches but the HIGHLIGHT of the DAY were the FBZ A.P.E. caches - in fact the BEST CACHES I have found in a long time.
~~
Last weekend I attended the Spring Fling Mega Event - there were a lot of really cool and complicated gadget caches but even those did not compare to the FBZ caches.
~~
The first mission we completed was 55(a). After reading some logs went to the posted coordinates and after a bit of a search remembered reading about it going back to original coordinates. Added a new wp to the cache via the app and headed over to the “new” GZ.
~~
There we found and AMAZING cache with lots of TOP Secret Evidence and lots of TBs. Read the info and found the cipher so took pictures of it and the evidence bags for future reference. Spent at least 10 -15 minutes examining all the evidence since it was the first completed mission and we felt that the more INTEL we collected the better to solve the FINAL MISSION.
~~
Little did we know that Missions 3 & 4 exceeded our expectation after finding Mission 1. Both were super creative and the hide with all the embellishments just made it even more spectacular.
~~
So excited to start the series and now I want to finish it quickly. Unfortunately, MAGICN3 is leaving for an extended vacation tomorrow and we have agreed to finish the series together!!! So when he is back in early Sept we will work hard to complete the remaining missions to gather the intelligence for the FINAL MiSSION.

Series Forward

Greetings!
~~
I assume many of you are familiar with Project A.P.E., the geocaching promotion in 2001 that is still going strong, with two original A.P.E. caches alive and well in Brazil and Washington State.
~~
I joined geocaching in 2008 and was immediately drawn to Project A.P.E. because of its cool theme that incorporated clues and treated caches as TOP SECRET “missions.” I thought a mission-based geocaching series would be fun to do in San Diego, so I created the Forbidden Zone A.P.E. geocaching series under the Simian Guerrilla Task Force, or SGTF alias.
~~
I built a website (https://fbz.geocaches.org) and put codewords into six different caches that could be collectively entered to reveal a final “Top Secret” seventh location where the “truth shall be revealed” related to “Operation Silverback.”
~~
I placed Planet of the Apes memorbilia in the caches (as travel bugs), assembled various props, and wrote up mission briefs pretending to be a paranoid conspiracy theorist who believes apes and aliens are working together to plan an immenent attack on mankind. It was tongue-and-cheeky, all in the spirit of good fun to celebrate Project A.P.E., the Planet of the Apes franchise, as well as X-Files and science fiction in general.
~~
A lot of San Diego cachers visit the caches over the past 14 years, posting photos of their exploits on the fbz site and submitting field reports detailing their progress as they completed the series. You aren’t required to create an account on fbz.geocaches.org to enter the codewords and reveal the final location, but you have that option (using the secret word ZAIUS) if you want to track your progress and earn “points” towards an operative ranking through the discovery of POTAM (Planet of the Apes) TBs, the uploading of pictures, the submission of field reports, etc.
~~
Over time the series slipped into decline due to muggling challenges, and the depracation of Adobe Flash (which was used to create the codeword panel on the fbz site). However, JJDuo convinced me earlier this year to keep the series alive for new geocachers.
~~
So, I replaced two of the archived caches and refreshed the other four caches with their original “intel.” I also installed a flash emulator on the fbz site (called Ruffle) that lets old Flash content play even though Flash is no longer supported.
~~
The MAIN reason I’m posting this to the group is to announce that I also created an official “Operation Silverback” ring as a reward for those who log all seven (7) caches and complete the series. The ring was created by Oakcoins and is trackable on GC.com with its own unique icon.
~~
So if you like

mission accomplished

Immediately upon exiting the vehicle, an alien presence could be strongly sensed, almost overwhelming so. Approaching the forbidden zone on foot, anxiety grew with every twist and turn. Yes, the Apes had been here and left totems to warn against human encroachment....

Only extensive Terrestrial Defense Force (TDF) training allowed me to maintain sanity while examining the repulsively fascinating evidence. Mind blasted by the horrific implications, I wandered back to civilization hoping the SGTF possessed the operational fortitude to combat this planet-threatening menace...!

Monkey's Triangle compromised

Unfortunately it seems that nefarious agents of the enemy have been diligently working to disrupt Task Force plans. Fortunately I was able to maintain contact with a high-ranking SGTF operative who conveyed crucial intel at each location, allowing the quest to continue....

But at the final stop, I witnessed incontrovertible confirmation of an alien connection. And it is my firm belief that extraterrestrials (or their earthly cooperatives) have absconded with damning materials detailing their sinister involvement. Ordered to log a successful find despite my abject failure to find anything useful, it is this agent's humble recommendation that further investigations be suspended until superior officers can unravel the mysterious disappearance of all evidence....

Intriguing CNN Story

An excellent piece of investigative journalism has been posted on CNN.com reporting what we have known for years. You will see evidence highlighted from this story firsthand at FBZ A.P.E 57. This development has prompted us to add a new resource to our research database entitled "The FBI Vault" which links directly to the unexplained phenomenon section of the FBI's document repository.
